Deborah Kaplan: Writer/Director

Writer/Director, Deb Kaplan On The LA Haunts That Make Her Most Happy

ELAINE SAYS: Chic, savvy and talented, Deborah Kaplan is the Writer/Director behind, "Can't Hardly Wait" and "Josie and the Pussycats". With those stats, it may not a surprise you that her list is full of goodies but you might not expect that she's also an AMAZING baker....you haven't lived until you try her Oatmeal Cookies with Sea Salt. And two little people who I'm sure have, are her girls, Keaton and Clover...Deb's favorite creations of all. [photo courtesy, Jeanna Sohn, Closet Visit]

EAT | DRINK
  1. Nothing Like a Great Brunch: Grub grub VIEW WEBSITE | LOCATION: Grub 911 Seward Street, Los Angeles [Hollywood] If I’m feeling fancy, the caviar brunch at Petrossian is an indulgent treat, but if I’m going completely off the rails then I’ll be at Grub. The vanilla oatmeal with a side of their sugared spicy bacon... Insane. Plus they give you that bowl of mixed sugared cereal to pick at when you sit down. You have to eat nothing but steamed kale and lemon wedges for the rest of the week.
  2. Dinner and a Movie: Hungry Cat + The Arclight Hungry cat patio VIEW WEBSITE | LOCATION: The Hungry Cat 1535 Vine Street, Los Angeles [Hollywood] I do love going to Hungry Cat and then walking over to the Arclight for a movie.  Delicious cocktails....In the sumer they do this watermelon and heirloom tomato salad that I now make at home.  And then there's the King Crab Leg with Mustard Butter.  For one horrible moment it was taken off the menu and i was seriously devastated.  Happy to say, it's back.   It's hard to get me to order anything else there.
  3. The Sweet Stuff: Mastro's Famous Butter Cake Mastro's butter cake VIEW WEBSITE | LOCATION: Mastro's 246 North Canon Drive, Beverly Hills [BH] My favorite indulgence in town is hands down, the butter cake at Mastro's.  They serve it to you right out of the oven....it's a communal dessert, so you wind up eating it way too fast, just so no one else can have more than you.
  4. A Great Place to Celebrate with Friends: Madeo Restaurant madeo LOCATION: Madeo 8897 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles [WeHo] I love Madeo --everyone speaks Italian and the food is always delicious.  I like the downstairs, old-school feel...Plus they give you those great big hunks of Parmigiano to nibble on with your wine (ask nicely, it's not on the menu!).
STYLE
  1. Refining the Perfect Gift: Le Labo Le Labo Candles VIEW WEBSITE | LOCATION: 8385 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles [3rd St] I like to buy people frivolous items that they would never buy for themselves. It could be a pair of Japanese socks from Barney's or a Petit Grain candle fro Le Labo on 3rd St.  And for las-minute gifts, I run down to Book Soup.  I love Book Soup. i have an iPad and Kindle but I still buy books. I have a 6 month old baby and the fact that she might grow up in a world without bookstores is insanely sad to me.
  2. I'm Mad for Shoes and Accessories: Creatures Of Comfort, Roseark, Clare Vivier roseark CREATURES OF COMFORT for Rachel Comey and LD Tuttle Shoes.  And Kathy Rose at ROSEARK has such an amazing eye! I wish I could buy every piece of jewelry in that store.  Plus, I think every woman should own a CLARE VIVIER--I have more than my share.  They are simple, chic and practical.  It's rare to find all three in one place!  everything Clare produces is made here in L.A. in a socially and ecologically responsible way...I carry her Le Trop Bag nearly every day and it makes me feel very French and cool.

  1. Everyone Needs a Secret Weapon: Nerida Joy Facials nerida joy VIEW WEBSITE | LOCATION: Nerida Joy 416 N. Bedford Drive, Beverly Hills [BH] My facialist is Nerida Joy in Beverly Hills.  She's really talented.
  2. ...Or two: Salon Duarte eva duarte VIEW WEBSITE | LOCATION: Salon Duarte 5927 Franklin Avenue, Los Angeles [Franklin Village] The only person I trust with my hair is Eva Duarte at Salon Duarte in Hollywood.  She's truly amazing -- and hilarious.  Plus, I pick up my favorite product, Leonor Greyl Creme Moelle de Bambou shampoo.  It's amazing and I don't have to load my hair up with conditioner afterwards.
  3. ...And a Great Find: Aurora Foot Spa aurora foot spa VIEW WEBSITE | LOCATION: Aurora Foot Spa 8324 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills [BH] You have to try the $30/hour reflexology massage at Aurora Foot Spa. They're open until 10:30 at night!  And did I mention it's THIRTY DOLLARS FOR AN HOUR MASSAGE?  Seriously.  I mean, that's basically free.
