Karen Kimmel: Artist + Founder, Kimmel Kids
Big, Weekend Adventures...That Your Little People Will Love Too!
ELAINE SAYS: It wasn't a surprise that Artist and Kid Lover, Karen Kimmel, created a great list of, "shake off the week" ways to explore LA [and it's kid-friendly too!]. Karen is a unique talent, inspiring little people through art [in addition to the beautiful works that made her a local legend]. I first learned of Karen's popular kids org, Kimmel Kids when I stumbled upon her modern, graphic stencil collections [produced in LA with local vendors and artisans], sold at some of my favorite stores...Lost and Found, A+R & LACMA included. She has collaborated with Fendi and Marc Jacobs, has been published in Vogue, W Magazine and now The List Collective. Thank you, Karen!

- Be An East Side Culture Vulture : Barnsdall Park, Los Feliz
Visit Barnsdall Art Park [4800 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles-Los Feliz]. Check out the museum and take an art class at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House or take in the 356 degree view. There is a cute Farmer's Market in the parking lot at Barnsdall on Wednesdays for all of your picnic needs. A little further south, grab some ice cream at Scoops [712 North Heliotrope Dr, Los Angeles-Silverlake]
- Unwind In The Woods, End High In The Sky: Griffith Park, Los Feliz
Pick up a lemonade at The Trails Cafe in Griffith Park [2333 Fern Dell Drive, Los Angeles-Los Feliz] and then hit the hills for a hike up to the Griffith Observatory [2800 East Observatory Road, Los Angeles-Los Feliz]. You can also head up to the abandoned Old Zoo for some exploring.
- Botanical Beauty, Natural Charm: San Marino
A game of Frisbee at Lacy Park in San Marino [1485 Virginia Road, San Marino] is fun. If you're out that way, it's always a trip to check out the Cactus garden and have afternoon tea at The Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens [1151 Oxford Road, San Marino] or plan a day of plants and peacocks at the Los Angeles Arboretum [301 North Baldwin Avenue-Arcadia]
- Climb, Swim....See Kids Snooze: Pasadena
Work up a sweat running around Kidspace Children's Museum in Pasadena [480 North Arroyo Boulevard, Pasadena] and then cool down at the nearby Rose Bowl Aquatics Center [360 North Arroyo Boulevard, Pasadena]. If you want a more artsy route, check out the exhibits or take a class at the Armory Center for the Arts [145 North Raymond Avenue, Pasadena]
- Heavenly Day for Haute Hippies: Malibu and The Palisades
Relax at the Self Realization Fellowship at Lake Shrine Temple [17190 Sunset Boulevard, Pacific Palisades] then take in the art at the Getty Villa [17985 Pacific Coast Highway, Pacific Palisades. Later, hang out at the Malibu Country Mart [3835 Cross Creek Road, Malibu] and grab an Orange Juice for your walk on the beach and cliffs across Highway 1
- The Skating Is Hot, The Shopping is Cool: Venice
Skateboarding on Venice Beach is great and then you can hit up the shops on Abbot Kinney....we love A+R [1121-1 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice] and Tortoise [1208 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice]. If you get hungry, we love the pretzel rolls at 3 Square Cafe & Bakery [1121 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice]
- Dim Sum and Then Some: Chinatown
My kids and I love to eat at Empress Pavillion, a Dim Sum in China Town. [988 North Hill Street, Los Angeles-Bamboo Plaza, Chinatown], because of the constant commotion of the carts being pulled all around while inviting the clients to choose their meal/dish between those displayed. After that, we love to take in the galleries of some nicknacks such as Chinese lanterns and Pop Snappers
- Sweet Things Delivered With A Small Town Vibe: Santa Monica
We adore the Brentwood Country Mart [225 26th Street, at the corner of San Vicente, Santa Monica] They have the BEST candy shop called, Edelweiss Chocolates....an outpost of the Beverly Hills establishment!
