Mini and Me
Hillary Fogelson: Founder + Author, Pale Girl Speaks
Writer, Sunscreen Activist and Los Feliz Mom Shares Her LA Kiddie Survival Guide
Sharing faves & finds is part of the mommy lifestyle & this mother of two is dailed. Hillary & I have been trading ideas for years so when I named my "Mini and Me" feature, she was one of the first people I called. When she's not managing the monkeys you can find her on Twitter, where PaleGirlSpeaks, reminds us all to wear sunscreen. BTW, she recommends Coola Mineral Baby for kids!

- Kid Friendly, Adult Approved VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: Katsuya 702 Americana Way, Glendale One of my favorite spots for a meal with my two girls is Katsuya at The Americana. If you go for an early lunch (it opens at 11:30) it’s usually pretty quiet and you can sit outside. The kids love sushi and the sushi-shaped lollipops they get at the end of the meal.
- A Girl's Gotta Shop VISIT WEBSITE When you have kids and you can't get out of the house, it's all about shopping online at theoutnet & net-a-porter…I'm obsessed with the Outnet. I just bought a cashmere leopard print scarf that is so soft and goes with everything. I actually ordered it as a gift for a friend and then couldn’t bare to part with it and had to order a second one! If I’m actually motivated enough to leave the house, I go to Lost and Found on Yucca.
- When Circles and Squares Aren't the Shape You're After VISIT WEBSITE I love a long run up in the hills by Griffith Observatory. It’s so beautiful and the dirt paths are easy on my knees. But if I'm looking to build muscle, I call personal trainer, Christine Lusita, She’s so knowledgeable and is truly invested in her clients’ success. She can create a nutrition plan for you as well.
- Keep it Class-y CONTACT: laurenchipman@gmail.com When my Girls were little, I always thought the art classes at Play (3rd Street) were really fun and creative. The kids leave class covered in homemade play doe or glue from a paper maiche globe… The classroom feels like a real artists’ studio…it’s cool. Now that they're 5 and 7, it's all about one-on-one music lessons. All three of us (yes, me included) take piano lessons from Lauren Chipman. She is a truly gifted musician and teacher. She plays piano, violin and viola and she's super cool, think retro punk...light years from the old bookish women I used to take piano from as a kid!"
- Let's Party VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: 4646 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles [Hollywood]I love Fresh Pressed for Birthday Parties. If you don't know it, it's a screen press t-shirt shop in Hollywood. You can have the party in their shop or, they’ll give you all the supplies for a party at home. The kids draw their picture, pick a shirt color and a color for their design and then voila! If the party is at the shop, the kids can even help with the actual press. Then, just order some food from Joan's On Third (They never let me down) and Finish it off with a cake from Baskin and Robbins on Larchmont. My girls love ice cream cake and theirs are the best! You can even bring them an image, an idea or a theme for the cake and they can usually accommodate.
- Traveling Family Style VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: 1500 Game Creek Road, Jackson, WY We just went to Jackon Hole, WY and had the most fabulous family vacation ever. It’s so beautiful and there are endless activities for kids; biking, hiking, horse back riding, fishing, going to a rodeo. Our girls spent two days at Game Creek Ranch and got to groom horses, feed chickens, learn to rope…it was amazing. And then, at the end of the day when everyone is dirty and smelly, you can head back to The Four Seasons in Teton Village and jump in the pool
- Nap in a Tube VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: Barneys New York 9570 Wilshire Boulevard Beverly Hills Simple fact…… if you have kids, you're tired! Without under-eye concealer I look like I’m preparing for some Halloween fest. Cle de Peau concealer is the best I’ve found. It’s expensive, but it lasts forever!
- Clearing the Clutter VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: Petit Tresor 634 1/2 North Robertson Boulevard [WeHo] For organizing kids’ stuff I think the Boon stuffed animal bags are the best invention yet. They are these really cool, modern colorful pod-like cushions that hold a ton of stuffed animals. I also think the Oeuf Toy Store is a perfect piece of furniture for storing and organizing Barbies.
- Making the Most of the Mundane VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: 7100 Santa Monica Boulevard, Los Angeles [Target Center, Weho] When you're a mom and you get a couple hours to yourself, you have to make the most of it! I love Happy Nails on La Brea and Santa Monica Blvd. (next to Target) it because I can get my errands done at Target and then pop in for a quick mani/pedi. They do a great job, every file and/or tool comes straight from a new sanitary pack and their prices are really reasonable.
- One More "Must" for Mom VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: 3335 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles [Silvelake] The Hard Wax Bikini Wax at Stark Waxing Studio (in Silverlake) is the best. I find the hard wax much gentler (only a few tears) and I think it does a much better job at grabbing the hair.
