Matthew Kaner: Bar Covell + AM/FM Wine
5 "Must Stops" for Wine and Bites in Santa Barbara
ELAINE SAYS: Matthew Kaner is a Santa Barbara, boy turned LA Grape God. With Silverlake Wine and Bar Covell under his belt, he went for a trifecta, following his passion back to the SB vinyards. Enter AM/FM Wine, a partnership with Keith Sarloos (Sarloos and sons). The personal backstory so charmed me that I asked Matthew to author an Escape List for my next trip to SB. But not before buying a bottle of AM/FM! (photo courtesy of tonx)

- La Super Rica Taqueria LOCATION: 622 North Milpas Street, Santa Barbara I love La Super Rica on Milpas. It's a DESTINATION. Family owned and operated. You can feel the energy while waiting in the line to order from the same person who's taken the orders since he was a kid. His Grandma is still pounding out, by hand, the most delicious tortilla you've ever tasted. DO NOT MISS THE GUACAMOLE!
- Super Cuca's VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: 622 North Milpas Street, Santa Barbara Since I was a kid, I've been going to Super Cuca's after baseball games, before going to the movies, or after a long day at the beach. Another family run establishment that has expanded to many locations all over the Santa Barbara/Goleta area. The Super Taco Plate is one of the most delicious things on the planet. Get the Carne Asada and take an entire bottle of the Salsa Verde with you to your table. Have a stranger take a picture of you to see the grin on your face.
- Cajun Kitchen LOCATION: 1924 De La Vina Street, Suite A, Santa Barbara For breakfast, you have to hit the Cajun Kitchen. I grew up playing baseball with the owners sons so we would always hit it for breakfast on game days. My mother's side of the family is from Louisiana also, so there's a familiarity in the food. Do not miss their omelets!
- Julienne VISIT WEBSITE| LOCATION: 138 E. Canon Perdido, Santa Barbara Julienne is the best restaurant in Santa Barbara, without a doubt. Justin and Emma West split the kitchen and front of house duties. Justin cures his own charcuterie, makes the farm to table concept dance in your mouth. Emma is one of the most accommodating Floor Manager's I've ever come into contact with. Their wine program is also done by Graham Tatomer who makes one of the hardest-to-get-your-hands-on white wine labels in Santa Barbara, aptly called Tatomoer. DO NOT MISS JULIENNE!
- Saarloos and Sons Vinyard and Tasting Room VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: Saarloos and Sons 2971 Grand Avenue, Los Olivos You can go two ways. You can hit small tasting rooms in the city of Santa Barbara...or you can drive an hour north and find yourself in countryside reminiscent of the South of France or Tuscany. Either way, you are about to smile bigger than you've ever imagined. Some of the Tasting Rooms in Santa Barbara to hit include: Municipal Winemakers, Carr, Whitcraft and Jaffurs. They are all DELICIOUS. But don't miss the Vineyards/Tasting Rooms in Los Olivos (A MUST STOP) including Saarloos & Sons on Grand Avenue. If you go on the weekend, they also do a cupcake tasting option! So delicious. I make my wine, AM/FM, with their owner Keith Saarloos.
- Dragonette Cellars VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION:2445 Alamo Pintado Avenue, Los Olivos Brandon Sparks-Gillis is an old friend, he is the winemaker and co-owner, and his wines are magical. Made in very small quantities so get them while they're available!
- Ethan/Verdad/Qupe VISIT WEBSITE | LOCATION: 2963 Grand Avenue, Los Olivos My good friend Ethan Lindquist, has a famous winemaking Father, who owns Qupe. Their wines are very good, and Ethan works in the tasting selling his own wines as well as those.
