This Art Consultant Shares Her Hot List of Emerging Artists To Watch, As LA Blasts Into "Art Storm"

ELAINE SAYS: Hayley Miner and I are a perfect combo....I'm always dying to know about emerging artists and she has all the info! As one of the 3 fab founders WLM Advisors, she's paid to know what's up in the art world. So I asked Hayley [seen here on left, with partners, Kathryn and Emily], for the 411 on some emerging artists to watch....and the timing is perfect! According to Hayley, "...this month is not just about hurricanes & the September issue. If you're in the art orbit you're getting ready for September's, "Art Storm" of gallery openings!" There are openings most Fridays and Saturdays this month and her picks include: "Kimberly Brooks' new show at Taylor de Cordoba," Blum & Poe's Matt Johnson show on Saturday, 9/10 and the brand new Carter & Citizen inaugural show with Kelly Kleinschrodt, in the Culver City art district. From food trucks and outrageous, sartorial displays to strollers, celebs & hipsters, Culver City Art District along La Cienega Boulevard, is worth a peak. So, art enthusiasts, check your L.A. art guide FOR YOUR ART, and start planning your weekend :)

  1. Kelly Kleinschrodt: Photographer + Video & Performance Artist kelly kleinschrodtVISIT GALLERY SITE | LOCATION: 2648 La Cienega Avenue (not blvd), Los AngelesThis UCLA MFA recent grad is one to watch.  Kleinschrodt has an uncanny ability to elevate ordinary subjects and objects. Her photograms (a specialized dark room technique) are breathtaking in that she transforms common life into art.  Her new exhibit in Berlin, "Adult Contemporary Family Romance" is currently on view at Kavi Gupta.  Her forthcoming show, "Distant Already" will open September 10 at Carter & Citizen where Kleinschrodt is represented.
  2. Molly Larkey: Painter + Sculptor Molly Larkey Sculpture VISIT ARTIST SITE Painter and sculptor.  Molly Larkey claims her work is about the contrast between verbal and visual language, which is evident from the last show I saw.  There is always a strong sense of color and form in her pieces. Whether it's a layered work of abstraction or a playful construction, Larkey's art has an emotional charge that I'm drawn to.  She is a MFA Rutgers grad who lives and works in L.A. and has exhibited at PS1 Contemporary Arts Center & at Saatchi Gallery in London.  You can find her work at Ochi Gallery or by visiting her site.
  3. Annie Lapin: Painter Annie LapinVISIT GALLERY SITE| LOCATION: 2622 South La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles [Culver City Arts District]This 2007 UCLA MFA graduate just had a impressive solo show at Honor Fraser Gallery titled, "The Pure Space Animate".  Lapin deserves attention not only for her immense talent but for the sheer force of expressiveness in her highly gestural paintings.  Her work seamlessly blends abstraction with landscape that is often richly layered. You can almost feel her working and re-working the surface and the energy contained is such that I have been dreaming about her powerful, luscious compositions from her recent show in July.  Lapin was the Editor's Pick in "New American Paintings" in January 2011.
  4. Benjamin Britton: Painter **Benjamin BrittonVISIT GALLERY | LOCATION: Ruth Bachofner Gallery 2525 Michigan Avenue, Suite G2 — Bergamot Station Art Center, Santa Monica [Santa Monica]This painter and UCLA MFA graduate, 2008.  Britton creates vibrant, moving canvases with loose, gestural brushwork. I have always felt swept up by his work as paradoxically, time stands still when confronted with his large-scale pieces but those moments also reveal an explosive quality.  Britton's passion and energy reverberate through every piece he produces. His current show, "Entering Abstraction" is at Ruth Bachofner Gallery until Sept 3.  and see more of his work at BenjaminBritton.com
  5. Dennis Koch: Painter Dennis KochVISIT GALLERY SITE | LOCATION: Marine Contemporary 1733 Abbot Kinney Boulevard, Venice [Abbot Kinney]Koch's recent "Standing Waves" exhibit at Marine Contemporary revealed the complexity of his thought process and the trajectory of his work.  Here is an example of his circle set series.  Koch places crayons on a power drill and meticulously applies the highly textured colors onto the surface.  The result is a thickly layered and complex series in one single piece. A pure sense of joy takes over when you're looking at a Dennis Koch work.
  6. Junghwa Lee: Sculptor + Installation Artist junghwa LeeVISIT GALLERY SITE | LOCATION Sabina Lee Gallery 971 Chung King Road, Los Angeles [Downtown]Lee is a Korean born artist and a recent graduate (2011) from UCLA's MFA program.  Her ceramic installations stopped me in my tracks.  The figures are at once arresting, disturbing and mesmerizing.  A powerful quality emanates from her often strange yet captivating pieces that demand your attention.  Lee said that she draws from the cultural differences between Korea and the U.S. as inspiration for her work which often are a kind of dream, a state that is between conscious and unconscious.  She is in the midst of preparing for her first solo exhibit that opens in October at Sabina Lee Gallery in Los Angeles.
  7. Matthew Brandt: Photographer matthew brandtVISIT GALLERY SITE | LOCATION: M + B Gallery 612 North Almont Drive, Los Angeles [West Hollywood]Brandt received his BFA from Cooper Union in 2004 and MFA from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2008.   This young photographer's work explores the process and alchemy of the medium. Silkscreening his own photograph, Brandt would then soak it in a multitude of liquids to develop them further. His upcoming show opens at M + B on Sept 16, 2011.  Brandt is represented by M + B gallery in West Hollywood and his work is in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the Armand Hammer Museum (Los Angeles). He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
  8. Chris Natrop: Multimedia Artist and Filmmaker chris NatropVISIT GALLERY SITE | LOCATION: Taylor DeCordoba Gallery  2660 South La Cienega Boulevard, Culver City [Culver City Arts District]Chris Natrop Moved to L.A. in 2005 with a degree from The Art Institute of Chicago, Natrop is a multimedia artist and filmmaker.  In some of his work, he uses the knife as his paint brush and creates hand-cut hanging paper to sculpt a space.  His last show was at Taylor De Cordoba titled "Myopic Spring Tangle".  Seeing his installations was like walking into a magical forest of visual projections.
